Il va falloir négocier l’opposition entre le Même et l’Autre sans crainte de perdre son identité d’où la tentation du repli sur soi et le risque de sa transformation en hostilité et destruction contre la menace de l’envahissement. Toutefois, dans les guerres ce n’est pas la dynamique de la haine qui est en cause mais d’autres facteurs comme l’intérêt économique et le pouvoir. En revanche, une fois que la lutte est engagée, la haine fait retour à la mesure de l’intensité et de l’horreur des morts et des destructions.

Before being called an enemy, the Other is a stranger. The opposition between the Same and the Other must be negotiated without fear of losing one’s identity, hence the temptation to withdraw into oneself and the risk of its transformation into hostility and destruction against the threat of invasion. In war, however, it is not the dynamic of hatred that is at stake, but other factors such as economic interest and power. On the other hand, once the struggle has begun, hatred returns in proportion to the intensity and horror of the death and destruction.
