Contrairement à ce qu’une historiographie ancienne a longtemps véhiculé, l’aventure de la France du Second Empire au Japon ne fut pas un complet échec. Si les circonstances dans lesquelles se déroula la restauration Meiji expliquent le sentiment de rupture éprouvé par la diplomatie française à la fin de la période, quelque dix années de relations diplomatiques – menées avec beaucoup d’ambition du temps de Léon Roches (1864-1868) – suffirent à faire du Second Empire un réel artisan de la modernisation du nouveau Japon.

Contrary to a common idea defended by a certain historiography, the adventure of the Second French Empire in Japan was not a total failure. If the circumstances of the Meiji Restoration explain the rupture experienced by French diplomacy at the end of the period, some ten years of diplomatic relations – conducted with great ambition by the time of Léon Roches (1864-1868) – were enough to make Second French Empire a real architect of the modernization of the new Japan.
