Pour Hitler et les membres actifs du parti nazi, relancer les fouilles entreprises à Olympie dans le contexte des Jeux olympiques de 1936 répond à un programme d’abord idéologique. Les nazis cherchent avant tout à s’approprier historiquement ce site antique renommé et à célébrer la parenté helléno-germanique, les Grecs étant pour eux les descendants des Aryens. De nombreuses publications consacrées à ces excavations furent diffusées en Allemagne dans les années 1936-1945. Sur le plan scientifique, leur impact fut toutefois très limité.

For Hitler and the active members of the Nazi Party, the excavations undertaken at Olympia on the eve and in the aftermath of the 1936 Olympic Games were primarily aimed at historically appropriating the renowned ancient site and celebrating the Hellenic-Germanic relationship – the Greeks being, for Nazis, descendants of the Aryans. Numerous publications devoted to these excavations were disseminated in Germany in the years 1936-1945. However, their scientific impact was very limited.
