Alors que la place des arts a toujours été présente dans les programmes français d’enseignement primaire et secondaire depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, l’instabilité des contenus, leurs fréquents changements d’appellation, leurs remises en question témoignent d’une certaine fragilité. Cet article rappelle les bases socio-historiques de l’enseignement du dessin et des arts plastiques afin de poser les jalons nécessaires à la compréhension de l’évolution de cet enseignement dans un contexte scolaire.

While the role of the arts has always been present in the French programs of primary and secondary education since the late nineteenth century, the instability of the contents, their frequent name changes, their questioning, show some fragility. This article recalls the socio-historical foundations of the teaching of drawing and visual arts in order to lay the foundations necessary for understanding the evolution of this teaching in a school setting.
