N2  - Les maîtrises (ou masters) en recherche en design permettent aux étudiant·e·s de se spécialiser en explorant un objet d’étude de leur choix avec une formation axée sur une démarche scientifique. À partir d’une étude de cas sur la maîtrise en design avec mémoire (MDM) à l’École de design de l’Université Laval, il appert qu’une certaine confusion s’observe chez les étudiant·e·s face à la recherche-action, la recherche-création et la recherche-projet dont les frontières sont perméables. Dans le but d’aider les apprenti·e·s chercheur·euse·s, cet essai théorique tente de clarifier ces trois types de recherche en proposant un modèle conceptuel mettant en lumière leurs divergences et convergences. Une analyse critique d’une trentaine d’articles scientifiques a été réalisée, puis complétée par trois entrevues semi-dirigées auprès de chercheur·euse·s utilisant la recherche-action, la recherche-création et la recherche-projet dans leur démarche de recherche. Trois principales contributions se dégagent de cette recherche : i) la recherche-action se distingue principalement de la recherche-projet et de la recherche-création du fait qu’elle ne mène pas à un artefact ; ii) en recherche-création, l’artefact se développe de façon concomitante à la recherche par le biais de la création ; iii) en recherche-projet, la recherche se fait généralement en amont et permet de planifier en aval le projet de conception qui mènera à l’artefact; Research masters in design allow students to specialize themselves by exploring an object of study of their choice while following a scientific approach. Based on a case study of the master’s degree in design with thesis (MDM) at the School of Design at Université Laval, it appears that students often find themselves confused when faced with action research, practice-based research and project-grounded research whose borders are permeable. In order to help apprentice researchers, this theoretical essay attempts to clarify these three types of research by proposing a conceptual model highlighting their divergences and convergences. A critical analysis of about thirty scientific articles was carried out, then supplemented by three semi-directed interviews with researchers conducting action research, practice-based research and project-grounded research. The results highlight that action research differs mainly from project-grounded research and practice-based research in that it does not lead to an artefact, while in practice-based research and project-grounded research, the artefact is part of the research process. In practice-based research, it is developed concomitantly with the research through the creation. In project-grounded research, the research is generally done upstream and follows downstream by the design project that will lead to the artefact
