N2  - Lorsque la France déclare la guerre à la Prusse en juillet 1870, le gouvernement britannique conserve une stricte neutralité tandis que l’opinion publique, à travers la presse notamment, réagit avec vigueur. Peu de voix s’élèvent alors en Grande-Bretagne pour défendre une France qui, jugée belliqueuse et agitée, semble fidèle à son image. Pourtant, au gré des défaites et des humiliations, les Britanniques se découvrent plein de compassion pour les Français ; le siège de Paris puis les exigences de la Prusse lors des conditions de paix finissent par retourner une opinion britannique qui condamne vivement l’annexion de l’Alsace-Lorraine. La guerre de 1870 amène ainsi les Britanniques à s’interroger sur les mutations continentales et à faire évoluer le regard qu’ils portaient sur la France depuis des décennies; When France declared war on Prussia in July of 1870, the British government maintained a strict neutrality while public opinion, through the press in particular, reacted with force. Few voices were raised in Britain at that time to defend a France which, considered belligerent and agitated, seemed true to her image. However, in proportion to the defeats and humiliations, the British developed a compassion for the French ; the siege of Paris and the demands of Prussia with regard to the peace conditions eventually to return to a British opinion that strongly condemned the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine. The war of 1870 led the British to examine mutations of the continent and to change the perspective they had had on France for decades
