The WEU, created in 1948 to face the Soviet threat and rapidly supplanted by NATO, recovered a little in the 1990s before fading again as the Atlantic Alliance was extended to the East and the EU increased its responsibilities regarding external relations. Together, these factors led to the dissolution of the WEU in 2010.
