N2  - RésuméL’objectif de cet article est de souligner le caractère central du concept de sympathie dans l’œuvre d’Adam Smith. Après quelques rappels essentiels relatifs aux travaux de l’auteur (I. Le double projet smithien), nous montrerons, à partir d’une étude détaillée de l’ Histoire de l’astronomie (II. Le modèle newtonien dans l’ Histoire de l’astronomie et les cours de rhétorique), que l’ambition de Smith en rédigeant la Théorie des sentiments moraux consiste à présenter le principe de sympathie comme l’équivalent à la sphère sociale de ce qu’était, selon lui, le principe de gravitation universelle au monde physique chez Newton (III. De la sympathie comme principe de gravitation sociale); This paper aims to underline the importance of the concept of sympathy in the works of Adam Smith. After some important observations relative to the works of the author (I. The double smithian project), we will show, from a precise study of the History of the astronomy (II. The newtonian model in the History of astronomy and the lectures on rhetoric), that Smith’s purpose in the Theory of moral sentiment consists to expose the principle of sympathy as the equivalent to the social sphere of what was, according to him, the principle of universal gravitation to the physical world in Newton’s model (III.
