N2  - Donald Trump’s accession and his various (sometimes contradictory) foreign policy positions have forced the European Union into a frank self-examination. The change of direction—begun to some extent by previous American administrations—is now clear: the United States is increasingly withdrawing from the defence of the European continent and from the Atlantic Alliance. It is with its back against the wall, then, that Europe will have to react and implement an independent defence strategy. This is not something that can be done in the blink of an eye but, as Jean-François Drevet stresses here, ‘letting time do its work’ should now be off the table. The EU has to speed up its reaction and find the institutional, economic and material means to equip itself with a credible common foreign and defence policy. This European Chronicle reminds us how the EU is placed in this regard, describing the obstacles to overcome and the questions to be resolved, and it points to how this new course might rapidly and effectively be adopted
