The Visitation, a testimony of liturgical reception: A comparison between the provinces of Uppsala and Rouen (late-fifteenth to mid-sixteenth century) - 2019.

The Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a liturgical feast definitively adopted in Western Christianity at the end of the Middle Ages. However, dioceses instigated it at different rhythms, according to their own choices regarding divine worship. In this article, we examine the reception of the Visitation in two ecclesiastical provinces: one French, Rouen, and the other Swedish, Uppsala. Basing our study on printed liturgical books, we illustrate, after describing the available source material, the spiritual issues that emerge when a new feast is instituted on a local, i.e., diocesian, level.
