The work of the sculptor Esteban de Obray in Navarre
- 2020.
23
Like many French artists, mainly from Normandy, Picardy, and Burgundy, Esteban de Obray left his home village of Saint-Thomas-la-Chaussée, near Rouen, to seek work and fortune in Spain at the dawn of the Golden Age. Established in Navarre, he traveled across the region to fulfill contracts and worked alongside other compatriots; his work, widely recognized, illustrates the transition from Flemish Gothic to the beginning of the Renaissance. The purpose of this study is to chart the artist’s career, taking a stylistic approach to his Iberian work in order to detect aesthetic connections with Rouen statuary at the start of the sixteenth century.
