N1 - 23 N2 - Problem-based learning is a method that follows a structured approach focusing on the student. The emphasis is less on teaching of concepts related to specific disciplines than on application of such concepts for the solution of problems. This article has three objectives. Firstly, we consider the process of professional education and how traditional accounting programmes have tried to meet its implicit cognitive objectives. Secondly, we address the issue of how the method of problem-based learning currently used in medical education might be adapted to the teaching of accounting. Thirdly, we describe an experiment involving students in the graduate programme at the Business School, University of Grenoble II.
