2. Phaedra and Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments. What heuristics for a moral behavioural economics? - 2023.

61

In the Theory of Moral Sentiments (TSM), Adam Smith often refers to tragedies in order to describe the complexity of human passions and sentiments, more particularly moral sentiments. In this article, we propose to explore the specific place of the character of Phaedra in the smithian philosophy of sympathy. To reread TSM through the character of Phaedra enables us to emphasize the key role of the intertwining of sympathy and the impartial spectator in the understanding of human motivations and behaviours. These insights are put into perspective with recent research in the field of behavioural economics and the role of moral emotions. JEL Classification: B12 - B30 - D91
