Arthouse movies or popular movies? It is common to place films in one of these two categories. In the same way, professional and amateur fields are often opposed. However, borders are porous and certain shifts may occur. This paper examines the long-term hybridization processes that have taken place in cinema history. It focuses on the technologies that are involved in the shooting, the mediation, and the reception of movies, particularly in the digital age (cameras, projectors, screens, computers, and so on). It also focuses on the social uses in an approach related to studies in digital humanities. Technologies play a major role in structuring the field of cinema. However, they are often overlooked in film studies. This paper seeks to bridge this gap.
