Structuring, supervising, and neutralizing the assessment of research entities: The writings of the French agency AERES/HCERES - 2020.

81

Documents produced by AERES/HCERES, the French academic research evaluation agency, are central: as a framework for assessment practice as well as its result. We examined research entities’ assessments from a semiotic point of view, through agency identity, focusing on the complex enunciation built during the evaluation process or “graphic reason” of reports. The agency’s visual and graphic incarnation shows the agonistic and axiological dimension of assessment. By analyzing the writings produced by the agency (guidelines, reports . . . ), we can demonstrate the importance of their form as well as the SWOT matrix, an analytical tool taken from business strategy, which we consider to be an intellectual technology (Goody).
