Part-time Employment Experience and Entrepreneurial Exit: Evidence from the German Socio-Economic Panel

<br/><br/> This study investigates the relationship between entrepreneurs’ previous part-time employment experiences and their decision to exit entrepreneurship. We draw on panel data comprising 2,304 observations of 695 self-employed individuals from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) covering the period 2007-2013. Results from a random-effects probit analysis indicate that a longer duration of part-time employment increases the likelihood of entrepreneurial exit; however, this effect diminishes with age and level of education. Overall, our research extends the implications of the person-environment fit perspective within the context of individuals’ employment backgrounds, contributing to the growing literature on fit-based approaches in entrepreneurship research.  Cette étude explore le lien entre l’expérience antérieure d’emploi à temps partiel et la décision de quitter l’entrepreneuriat. À partir des données du Panel socio-économique allemand (GSOEP) de 2007 à 2013, nous analysons un échantillon de 695 travailleurs indépendants. Les résultats d’un modèle probit à effets aléatoires montrent qu’une expérience prolongée à temps partiel augmente la probabilité de sortie de l’entrepreneuriat, mais que cet effet diminue avec l’âge et le niveau d’éducation. Notre étude élargit l’application de la théorie de l’adéquation personne-environnement aux trajectoires entrepreneuriales et enrichit la littérature sur l’entrepreneuriat en y intégrant une perspective fondée sur l’adéquation.
