Individualisation and Autonomization of Series Viewing Practices in France. Comparison of the Pratiques Culturelles des Français-es 2018 and Elipss Series 2017 Surveys - 2024.

Television series have become a leading cultural practice for French people. Using data from the 2018 French Cultural Practices survey, this article examines taste, viewing practices and sociability of series watching. Based, on the one hand, on an analysis of the results of PC18 and a multivariate analysis of the data followed by a classification, and, on the other hand, on a comparison with the 2018 contemporaneous SERIES' survey, we aim to demonstrate the individualisation of this cultural practice, its autonomy from television programs, TV set and even individual's homes. The survey attests that series viewing practices have become the site of a sociological differentiation similar to music and characteristic of contemporary ‘mediacultures’ and, at a finer level, of an individualisation of interests and preferences.‪
