TY - BOOK AU - Aubourg,Valérie AU - Biberson,Monica TI - Glossolalia: The language of angels? A comparative look at Pentecostal and charismatic milieus on Réunion Island PY - 2023///. N1 - 40 N2 - Glossolalia is seen as the prototype of elements that are as mysterious as they are irrational, guaranteeing believers’ fascination with Pentecostal-charismatic forms of worship. However, my own field observations on Réunion Island have led me to qualify this representation: beyond the seemingly anarchic nature of this phenomenon, standards and codes are associated with it. Thus, my intention here is to show the influence exerted by the religious and organizational context on these individual ecstatic experiences. To this end, I will draw on a comparison between three Réunionese groups: Pentecostal, Catholic charismatic, and charismatic evangelical. In each case I will take an original approach by studying the musicality of instances of glossolalia. First I will carefully situate these sound interventions in the context of their utterance. Then I will link them to the dogmatic approach taken by each religious group. The differences between these assemblies will show that there is a plurality of “heavenly songs.” This will help us see how, in the disordered state in which glossolalists seem to lose themselves, their cultural and religious tradition still influences their behavior.
