Abuse in gerontology: A psychodynamic perspective - 2015.

48

The author addresses the issue of abuse in gerontology within institutions and family relationships, among carers and among the elderly. With the help of some clinical examples, the author attempts to analyze the drives at work between the different protagonists, emphasizing the death drive and narcissism, and taking account of the particular psychological characteristics of this elderly population—such as mental and physical decline, dependence, and the traumatic proximity of death—which may weigh heavily in the economic scales of violence.
