This paper explores a clinical case as a means of positing a new hypothesis in the field of psychosomatics. It is the result of doctoral research and clinical practice in the field of psychology in the gynaecological oncology department at Ophir Loyola Hospital in Belém, Brazil. In the particular case of breast cancer, the author argues that it is important to consider analysis of the subjective relation of the body to work as a central mediator in recovering good health. The author’s results show that when subjective reworking of the relation to work is achieved in the individual’s psychic economy, this helps to obtain lasting periods of remission in the patients studied.
