In 2018, 43,120 people were affiliated with Agessa and the Maison des artists (MDA), the two associations responsible for managing tax and social security schemes for authors and artists respectively. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the demographics and artistic incomes of AGESSA and MDA-affiliated professionals in 2018, enhancing the overall picture for 2018 with a few additional factors of change. The affiliated artist and author population increased by a factor of 1.6 between 2001 and 2018, boosted by a lowering of the affiliation threshold and a strong increase in the number of graphic designers. The average age of artists and authors is higher than that of the active population and the vast majority of them live in the Île-de-France region [Paris and its surrounding departments]. Over the course of 20 years this group has seen an increasing proportion of women, despite the majority of almost all professions being male dominated. The artistic incomes of MDA/AGESSA-affiliated artists in 2018 are highly divergent depending on profession, as well as within each profession, showing both very high and very low incomes across the board. Men and residents of the Île-de-France region have on average higher incomes, but levels vary depending on occupation.
