In December 2024, Bashar al-Assad’s regime suddenly collapsed. Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the Islamist Hay‘at Tahrir al-Sham group, became Syria’s new head of state. While the early stages of the transition were uneventful, a series of massacres of Alawites occurred in March 2025. As a number of foreign powers attempt to increase their influence in Syria, the outlook for the country’s stability remains uncertain.
