The French Navy’s patrols in the Red Sea have taught much about tactics and offered a number of lessons which, incidentally, have supported decisions made by the command. Uncertainty when facing a many-faceted threat underlines the need for anticipation and intelligence collection. The operational effectiveness of a warship relies primarily on its crew, thereafter on its fitted systems. Any decision to engage will always be a human one.
