The Tondaimans, an ancient royal family from Pudukkottai (Tamil Nadu, South India), have been using photography for various social purposes since 1858. The family’s social status was redefined after independence in 1947. The Tondaimans managed to make photography their own, improve its preservation and increase its circulation, which led to the enhancement of their cultural heritage. The family was thus able to strengthen its status in local society.
