N2  - Contrary to the prevailing view that the structures and values of democratic Athens left no room, at least not to any significant extent, for the practices of patronage and evergetism, sources from the 4th century B.C., and in particular those that are oratory-based, appear to show that the links established between benefactors and beneficiaries corresponded to the widely accepted notion of clientelistic relations.
