Based on the singular testimony of an elderly French veteran of the Algerian War, the authors analyze the story of his subjective experience, combining an analytical perspective and a phenomenological approach. Beyond the still-active post-traumatic avoidance symptoms and the account of violence, which was difficult for the researcher to endure, the authors observe, among other things, a verbal density, fragmented by splitting, disoriented in terms of temporality, and resorting to various defensive processes.
