This article looks at domestic murder, one of the most extreme forms of violence within couples and families. Based on a clinical case, we examine psycho-conjugal functioning in order to identify the psychic processes underlying the dynamics of conjugal murder. Based on a clinical interview with Marta, whom we met as part of a research project, we examine how domestic murder is part of a deadly intrafamilial dynamic in which aggression circulates in mirror image, but also of a permanent destructive relational state aimed at preserving family narcissism and ensuring its survival. We discuss how the murderous dynamic re-actualizes, on the one hand, the subject’s traumas, left unspoken and contaminating family ties, and on the other, the reversal and alternation of the offender-victim positions. In conclusion, we discuss the particularities of clinical work with perpetrators of domestic violence.
