This article examines the multiple conflicts of use observed around Lac de Guiers (Lake Guiers), employing “classic” arguments linked to the control of land resources around the lake, but also, and more recently, around the ecological quality of the environment in connection with competition between different water uses and practices. In the light of the socio-environmental controversies surrounding the quality of the water needed for various purposes (high and low intensity agriculture, livestock farming, domestic supply, etc.), the conflicts appear not only as an expression of the issues involved in controlling land, but also as shifting realities, depending on the different interests, negotiations and forms of arrangement that are established between the players concerned. Socio-environmental and health arguments are introduced and deployed in the dynamics of the conflicts, both as elements that fuel and complicate the basic conflicts relating to the appropriation of land resources, and at the same time as opportunities to forge new alliances and form collectives capable of defending the interests of the participants.
