The Goddess Movement: Confrontations in the feminist academic field

After outlining the origins of the Goddess Movement and its two founding beliefs – original matriarchy and the existence of an initial worship of the Goddess –, this article details the main academic feminist critiques brought to bear on the Movement since its emergence. As feminist critiques of the Goddess Movement take place in the context of claims to spirituality that also identify themselves as feminist, the controversy is internal to feminism. It takes place within the academic world because the Goddess Movement relies heavily on academic references and because several of the Movement’s key representatives have occupied academic positions.
