Is Giving the Audience a Live Nighttime Listening Option a Goal of Public Service? The Example of France and France Inter - 2013.

84

In 2012, after almost 60 years of nocturnal activity, France Inter, the French general-interest public radio station, stopped specific and live-feed nighttime broadcasting. Could this become the new orientation of the public service broadcasting (PSB) radio station? In fact, would it not be a mission for PSB to offer a live, nighttime radio presence to the audience? This paper presents a brief historical presentation of nighttime radio in France, and its options with respect to the legal obligations of Radio France. The paper concludes by exploring nighttime public radio operations of five other European countries.
