N2  - Using data from in-depth interviews with Russian citizens in 2022 and digital ethnography, we explore the ways and meanings of referring to cultural patterns and cultural practices in a crisis, as well as the cultural repertoire of these references. In line with grounded theory strategy, the following procedures have been identified: 1) culture as a way of living through the crisis in escapism and the search for meaning, 2) culture as an explanation of what is happening through scholarly-sounding rationalization, a fictionalized past, and stories of heroism and adventure, and 3) culture as resistance, demonstration of solidarity, and position formation
