En apparence identifiable comme appartenant au genre bien établi du « récit d’esclave », l’œuvre comporte néanmoins certains traits propres qui la distinguent : on s’intéressera, selon une approche comparative, notamment à l’autorité de l’auteur et à l’identité canadienne de son œuvre pour mieux en définir l’originalité
