Vraisemblablement d’origine accidentelle, l’incendie fut pourtant qualifié d’ « attentat » par le résident de France à Genève, Pierre-Michel Hennin, qui, de même que Voltaire depuis Ferney, en attribuait la responsabilité aux représentants. Pour comprendre la force symbolique dont s’était ainsi retrouvé investi le théâtre dans le contexte genevois, on propose ici une double recontextualisation de l’événement. D’une part à court terme, comme un épisode de la crise politique genevoise des années 1766-1768 ; d’autre part à moyen terme, comme un prolongement de la querelle du théâtre allumée une dizaine d’années auparavant par d’Alembert lorsqu’il avait suggéré aux Genevois, dans le fameux article « Genève » de l’ Encyclopédie, d’accueillir la comédie en leur sein. À la croisée de ces deux contextes, politique et littéraire, on sera conduit à mettre en valeur la portée et la réception genevoises, souvent méconnues, de la Lettre à d’Alembert de Rousseau, et dès lors à montrer que l’opposition au théâtre à Genève prend la forme d’une dénonciation, au nom de l’identité genevoise, d’un « impérialisme culturel » français. La comédie, loin de n’être qu’un simple « amusement de classes », apparaît dès lors à la fois comme le symbole et le levier de cet impérialisme culturel, mis en branle par Voltaire en étroite collaboration avec le résident Hennin au nom de la fonction civilisatrice attribuée à la comédie. ABSTRACT On the night of the 29th of January 1768, the Geneva theatre was destroyed by fire. It had been built two years previously to answer the wishes of the foreign plenipotentiaries sent into the city to put an end to the political strife which had been pitting the négatifs against the représentants ever since 1762. The fire, even though it was probably accidental, was immediately considered by most to be a politically motivated act of arson. The French résident in Geneva, Pierre-Michel Hennin, as well as Voltaire from neighbouring Ferney, were convinced that the représentants were to blame for it. The aim of this article is thus to understand what the theatre stood for in the political context of mid eighteenth-century Geneva. In the short term, the fire was an important moment in the final days of the ongoing political crisis. In the longer run, it was a new episode in the quarrel which had originated ten years earlier when d’Alembert, in his famous « Geneva » article in the Encyclopédie, had suggested that Geneva have a permanent stage.
