What if music told us about life with all its normalities (modal music), its misfortunes (key changes), and its failures (distortions)? By looking for music, the author encounters it as a “thing,” a strangeness so familiar that it even nests in the conditions of language. Life as a whole makes a kind of music that must be listened to, just as the social worker listens.
