The imaginary is often referred to as a secondary function, a substitute allowing us to escape the constraints of reality; we frequently recognize it as pointing beyond reason, a source of specifically human “maladaptation.” In contradiction to these perceptions, we propose to apprehend the imaginary as a form of adaptability, the most essential capital to allow us to guide our thoughts and behaviors “in reality.”
