In this article, the author attempts to measure the effects that the introduction of narcissism and ego has on metapsychology. He chooses to focus his analysis on three of the many themes that are worthy of consideration: the effects on the theory of instincts and the question of instinctual introjection within the ego, the place of the object with regard to the ego, stemming from the clinical question of melancholy, and finally, the narcissistic “situations” leading to extreme forms of anti-sociality.
