Empathy as a Founding Principle of Observation and Care in Work with Babies - 2014.

73

Empathy is part of the modalities which establish links within primary andpreverbal intersubjectivity. Observation, inspired by Esther Bick’s method and relying on a profoundly empathic attitude toward the child as well as the mother, can open a field of therapeutic applications in situations where the first links within intersubjectivity are lacking. The author offers an analysis of the process underlying this therapeutic process. He establishes a parallel with Serge Lebovici’s model of therapeutic parent-infant consultations, in particular the notion of metaphor-generating empathy.
