<br/><br/> This article examines foreign residents’ extraterritorial privileges in Japan established by the treaty regime in the 1860s, particularly the “right to hunt” asserted by British authorities in Japan. Conflicts between Japanese and consular jurisdiction over hunting reveal the contradictions among extraterritoriality, international law, and Japanese territorial sovereignty.
