Before its gradual westernization, which began in the second half of the eighteenth century, the foreign policy institutions as well the diplomatic practices of the Ottoman Empire were far from remaining unchanged and evolved not only according to current changes in the balance of interstate power relations but also due to redefinitions of its own political identity.
