While the individual stories of these monarchs are well known, a comparison of their actions and the historical contexts in which they operated allows us to understand better why colonial monarchs like Mohammed V and Norodom Sihanouk successfully managed to be recognized as founding fathers of their respective nations, while Bao Dai was written off as a colonial puppet
