L’écriture des Années, cependant, fait passer l’interprétation des événements non seulement par la conjonction de l’anachronique et de l’hétérogène, mais par celle de l’intime et de l’histoire. La séquence Mai 68 des Années se révèle exemplaire de cette méthode : différée et déplacée, la mort du père, survenue en 1967, traverse la mémoire de la femme des ekphraseis photographiques et filmiques – et s’inscrit en creux dans l’évocation de l’événement historique.  With Ernaux as with Proust, the event only happens afterwards and laterally. The writing of Les Années, however, takes the interpretation of events not only through the conjunction of the anachronistic and the heterogeneous, but through that of the intimate and history. The May 68 sequence of Les Années proves to be exemplary of this method: deferred and displaced, the death of the father, which occurred in 1967, crosses the memory of the woman who appears in the photographic and filmic ekphraseis – and is implicitly inscribed in the evocation of the historic event.
