TY - BOOK AU - Belloc,Hervé AU - Moreau,Philippe TI - The Brigetio Inscription CIL, III, 4346 (CLE, 440) PY - 2003///. N1 - 40 N2 - The Pannonian inscription, CIL III, 4346, offers the reader three puzzles and their solutions. The most complex depends on multiple links of kinship between five people, as a result of a marriage between a paternal uncle and his niece. Metrical and stylistic analysis reveal the influence of Ovid and suggest a cultured milieu. The marriage in question provides one of the few examples of marriage between relatives separated by three degrees, which was legal between Claudius I and Constantius II. But it raises the question of how to assess such an endogamic union, combining an existing with a new relationship of kinship, given that the Greco-Roman world in general emphasizes the undesirability of such unions UR - https://shs.cairn.info/journal-revue-de-philologie-litterature-et-histoire-anciennes-2003-1-page-79?lang=en ER -
