The country of reference with regards to stability in Africa has joined many other countries of the continent in opting for a military putsch. Since a poorly prepared liberalization program and the struggle for power waged by political parties and interest groups have both aggravated the economic situation, the challenge for the transition government— and for Ivoirian society—is to invent new political, social, and economic rules for the management of the structural handicaps the country now faces in the new international context.
