N1 - 98 N2 - The 1989-97 civil war in Liberia provided many opportunities to observe practices of violence, including those believed to operate in a mystical dimension. Certain military techniques, such as the use of anti-bullet medicine and the consumption of human flesh, were described by Liberians as a form of witchcraft. The word “witchcraft” seems to have changed in meaning significantly during the twentieth century.
