The Israeli factor and the shaping of US Iranian policy

To understand US Iranian policy, one must put it into perspective with Israeli-American relations. Although there are commonalities in the US and Israeli processes of securitization of the “Iranian threat,” an in-depth look at both countries’ positions calls for a nuanced analysis and allows us to reveal divergences that can sometimes lead to diplomatic tension between the two allies. The evolution of the strategic triangle composed of the United States, Israel, and Iran over the last three decades has been shaped by a few key factors: the rise of Hezbollah, the development of Iran’s nuclear program, and the ongoing civil war in Syria.
