N2  - L’économie est une activité spécifiquement humaine. Pourtant, elle tend à fonctionner de manière autonome, jusqu’à échapper au contrôle de l’homme, et même se retourner contre lui. Cette contribution examine la manière dont quelques théologiens se sont situés par rapport à la thèse de l’autonomisation de l’économie comme conséquence ou produit de la sécularisation. Elle s’intéresse notamment à l’interprétation que fait William Cavanaugh de la rupture apparente entre l’approche de l’économie par les pères conciliaires et le pape François qui dénonce avec force le caractère idolâtrique de l’économie moderne et de son moteur : le consumérisme; Economics is a specifically human activity. However, it tends to function autonomously, to the point of escaping human control and even turning against humanity. This essay explores how several theologians have responded to the thesis that the autonomy of economics is a consequence or product of secularisation. It focuses in particular on William Cavanaugh’s interpretation of the apparent rupture between the approach to economics taken by the Council Fathers and that of Pope Francis, who strongly denounces the idolatrous nature of the modern economy and its driving force: consumerism
