‪Relations between Latin people and Greeks regarding the matter of the Empire are often seen in the light of the debates of the ninth and tenth centuries. To better appreciate its scope, it is worth starting from the end of the sixth century to observe how the gradual “Westernization” of the Papacy created the conditions for conflict. Christian universalism was as important, if not more so, as the Roman dimension in the notion of Empire.‪
