Creating the Revue du mois: the making of a new journal during the Belle Époque - 2018.

6

This article traces the beginnings of the Revue du mois, a journal created in 1905 by the mathematician Emile Borel to address scientific topics for the general public. Although at this time similar periodicals were becoming common, ? ?la Revue du mois stood out because it offered articles dealing with recent scientific questions, and made forays in the artistic world by reporting on theater and literature. Based on Borel’s personal papers, the article documents the making of the first issues. It analyzes how the editorial policy of the journal was formulated, how the contradictory goals of high quality and publishing for the general public were met, and how the journal gradually came to develop a stable readership.
