Deindustrialization adversely affected health and mortality in a number of ways. The evidence for the Clydeside region suggests that deindustrialization was one of the key causal agents in the widening gap in morbidity and mortality between Clydeside and the rest of Scotland. Together with a dominant narrative of loss and health erosion there also co-existed a more muted but clear “liberation” story of emancipation from dangerous and toxic industrial jobs.
