<subfield code="a">Violence on the phone : war criminals interacting to enforce mass aggression during the Bosnian conflictRudeness may work as a very pervasive kind of violence, as we shall see by analyzing various corpora of war leaders interacting on the phone to give orders during the Bosnian conflict in Yougoslavia. Radovan Karadžić, former president of the Serbian Republic (recently handed over to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, The Hague), Ratko Mladić (formerly in command of the Serbian Federal Army in Bosnia, still on the run), Slobodan Milošević (former president of Serbia & Yougoslavia, who died in jail at the Hague) and some other major characters of the Bosnian conflict. The telephone calls took place in 1992, at the start of the Bosnian war, but they have been made available recently, in a book published by the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights Milošević vs Jugoslavija, published in Belgrade in 2004. We picked 6 samples (863 speech turns) out of the vast quantity of material available. We shall analyze these interactions from a pragmatic standpoint, taking into account the social settings of utterances according to overt and covert hierarchies. Above all, we’ll focus on speech acts strongly fraught with rudeness, with a high potential of covert violence and overt infringement of roles and status between speakers involved in warfare : threats and disqualification to trigger acts of war, crimes against humanity and genocide. We aim to highlight the intricate interplay of potential and actual violence through the specific category of rude speech, in both launching and legitimizing violent acts against civilian populations in a context of warfare.</subfield>
